Too close to the London airports. British Airways used to have a substantial operation at BHX
but withdrew to LHR
I actually think BHX
would be better if it was on the north of Brum, on a location where it could easily expand. As it stands though, Heathrow is well connected to the West Midlands catchment by road and some train services. There are also fast coach services down the M40 offering everything from cheap fares to onboard wireless internet, right to the airport.
it's just not a going proposition for those two carriers to start BHX
when all it would do is weaken their LHR
routes. Emirates is a separate proposition as they can also attract the ethnic minority traveller going east, by offering connectivity at DXB
that those two British airlines couldn't hope to match. Same goes for United to Newark going west.
has a future, just not as a hub. It's more of a spoke location, feeding other hubs, but LHR
is too close for the big two UK
longhaul airlines to consider it. Otherwise, FlyBE
Monarch and the rest offer plenty of options.
