It's hard to make money with an A310 these days. Especially one which operates into a difficult airport like LBA
, where there are more than average diversions needed.
I doubt it's anything to do with whether there is a catchment or not, it's all down to the costs. If LBA
had a longer runway and was properly capable of handling something like a 777 then maybe it could have worked out. A310 economics just aren't great these days and only someone like TSC
is making it work with their policy of stuffing the plane with seats and using longer runways.
I thought it was because the A310 was being retired and there's a lack of suitable aircraft to replace it? I know there was discussion for a long time about the 772 operating there, what happened to that?
They still have a second A310 fleet. PK
operate two distinct A310 fleets, one leased and one owned apparently. If you try to understand the thinking of PIA
these days all you'll get is a headache for your trouble.
A backward step once again from PIA
and another broken promise, i have heard on the grapevine that PIA
may reintroduce the route but using a smaller aircraft a320 or similar !!! i repeat it is only a rumour!!
Well the Leeds - Islamabad route was only "suspended" by PIA
. I understand the airport has been in contact with PIA
regarding the issue and it has indicated that in the future, they may well return.
The daft thing about this was when the route stopped, That passenger numbers were up 20% and yields were also up by a two digit percentage compared to the year before.
Fixed costs are an issue for operations like LBA
doesn't operate daily, so if their crews are overnighting that means a few days away from base. Similarly they can't swap with MAN
crews as MAN
doesn't have any A310 operations.
Yield isn't everything, unfortunately. PK
would be better off operating the route with more frequency and a more efficient aircraft such as the 787. Suspending the route rather than a formal pull-out is a better option as it keeps some of the options open for them. PK
could source suitable aircraft from lessors.
